There are two types of membership with the College, Affiliated membership and Full membership, each of which are broken down into different membership categories depending on your qualifications, experience and location.

If you are an undergraduate medical student in the EU with an interest in psychiatry, you can become a student member free of charge for the duration of your degree.

Pre-Exam Trainee membership is available for doctors who are registered on the Basic Specialist Training Scheme in psychiatry and have not yet completed the Basic Specialist Training Clinical Membership Exam.

Affiliate Membership is available to all doctors working in psychiatry who are on the General or Supervised division of the Irish Medical Council Register, are not in an approved training post and have not completed the Irish Clinical Membership Exam.

Psychiatrists who completed their training in Ireland but no longer reside in the country are eligible to apply for Full Specialist Membership. Full membership of the College is available to all doctors who are eligible for one of the following four categories of membership. Those eligible for full membership must have passed the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam from July 2011 or MRCPsych (or equivalent) prior to July 2011.
